Hiring in pharma and healthtech is never just about filling a role. Every decision is tied to regulation, quality, and risk. And as organisations scale, the pressure to move quickly can clash with the need to stay compliant.
One poorly scoped role or delayed onboarding can trigger compliance gaps, stall clinical progress, or complicate audit readiness.
As businesses scale across new regions or transition from R&D to commercial operations, hiring often outpaces process. But regulation doesn’t wait. That’s why the most effective TA leaders treat compliance as a core input, not a post-hire add-on.
Here are four areas to get right early.
1. Clarify ownership across quality, regulatory and talent
Roles that sit within GxP, PV or QA environments often touch multiple functions. But in many teams, no one owns the full picture. Define who signs off job scope, who manages documentation, and how alignment happens between hiring, compliance and quality teams. Without it, risk spreads fast.
2. Build audit readiness into onboarding
Regulated roles don’t just need a contract, they need a paper trail. Training records, role competencies, SOP alignment and org structure should all be in place from day one. If you’re working with external hiring partners or using EOR models, this needs to be embedded into delivery. A compliant hire isn’t just about the candidate. It’s about the process around them.
3. Challenge the brief, not just the candidate
In regulated environments, job briefs are often reactive, designed to meet an audit, not a long-term need. But if the role isn’t clearly tied to regulatory scope and internal accountability, the hire becomes a liability. High-performing teams challenge job design early, map the role to SOPs, and ensure the function is set up to succeed, not just to pass inspection.
4. Align on employment model from the start
Expanding into new regions? Converting a critical contractor into a permanent role? If entity setup or employment structure isn’t confirmed early, you risk offer delays, misclassification or non-compliance. Whether you use internal contracts or an EOR partner, make the decision part of your briefing process, not a last-minute workaround.
In regulated industries, hiring can’t be treated as an isolated function. It’s a core part of how businesses manage risk, meet milestones and protect long-term value. The earlier compliance is built into the hiring process, the more effectively teams scale.
